Today Congressman Maffei joined with a bipartisan group of more than 50 of his colleagues in the House to send a letter to President Obama asking him to resist recommendations to raise troop levels in Afghanistan. Maffei said that now is not the time to spend billions more on a war of undetermined length and scope, particularly when the military mission is not clearly defined and the country is facing severe economic distress and an increasing deficit.
Rep Maffei said: “I have been concerned since before the day I took office about our lack of focus on the military mission in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, the more we learn about the situation, the less convinced I am that increasing troop levels will result in success. Without a clearly defined mission, I do not think investing billions more in this war and asking more service men and women to risk their lives is the right answer.”
