Today Congressman Dan Maffei announced the Department of Transportation has awarded a grant in the amount of $2,518,000 for Centro to build a New Downtown Syracuse Transfer Hub.
This grant provides funds to the Central New York Regional Transportation Authority to move its current transfer hub to an off street location to provide safer access to the transit system, while also providing protected areas from the weather for riders.
Representative Maffei said: “I want to congratulate Centro on receiving this grant. This significant funding for a new transfer hub will go a long way in improving service for riders and safety for all drivers and pedestrians in downtown Syracuse.”
The funds in this grant will be used for land acquisition, engineering and design, and construction management services that will lead to the construction of a new bus transfer facility to replace the existing on-street transfer operations that serve existing Centro bus routes. The new facility will be on a 1.43 acre site bounded on the south by East Adams Street, on the north by a parking garage operated by the Syracuse Industrial Development Agency, on the east by South Warren Street, and on the west by South Salina Street. Elements of the project include a climate controlled waiting area for riders with an extended wait between transfers, weather protected outdoor waiting areas for short term transfers, information/supervisor office, driver waiting room, and an automated fare vending machine.
